Wedding film trends 2026: what couples in India are asking for

Indian weddings have always been filmed. What has changed is how couples want to watch them. The four-hour DVD is now a family record; the film couples actually watch again — and share — is short, emotional and made for a phone screen. Here are the trends we see couples asking for in 2026, and how to plan your shoot around them.

1. Vertical first, not vertical later

Most of your film will be watched on Instagram, WhatsApp status and family groups. Couples now ask for reels that are shot vertical, not just cropped from a landscape film. That means a crew member framing for 9:16 during the key moments — the entry, the varmala, the pheras, the vidaai. Ask your team how they will cover both formats.

2. The next-day teaser

Nobody wants to wait weeks to share their wedding. A 45–90 second teaser delivered within days — sometimes the very next day — has become the most-requested add-on. It keeps the excitement alive while relatives are still talking about the wedding.

3. Documentary-style candid films

Couples are moving away from heavily posed, slow-motion-everything films. They want the real moments: Papa’s speech that made everyone cry, the cousins dancing badly at the sangeet, Dadi blessing the couple. A good candid team stays invisible, follows the emotion and lets the story come from what actually happened.

Tip: share a list of the 10 people who matter most with your crew. The best candid moments usually involve them.

4. Real audio: vows, speeches and voice notes

Music alone can feel generic. More films now open with real voices — a letter read by the bride, the groom’s nervous laugh, a parent’s blessing. If you plan to say something special, tell your team so they mic it properly.

5. Natural colour, warm light

The over-saturated, heavy-filter look is fading. Couples prefer natural skin tones and warm, film-like colour — the kind that will still look good in twenty years. Look at a team’s full films, not just their reels, to judge their colour.

6. Drone, used with purpose

Aerial shots of the baraat, the venue lit up at night or a ghat at sunrise add real scale. But drones need a licensed pilot and permission from the venue and local rules. A good team will tell you honestly where a drone is and isn’t allowed.

7. Pre-wedding shoots with a story

Pre-wedding shoots are moving beyond the same rose-garden poses. Couples choose places that mean something — their city’s ghats, the college where they met, a favourite café — and want a short song film for the sangeet screen plus reels and a save-the-date video for invites.

8. Traditional and candid together

Families still want every ritual and every relative documented, and that matters. The trend is not choosing one over the other but booking both: a traditional team for the complete record, and a candid team for the feeling. Smaller functions like haldi and mehendi often need just a two-person crew, while the main day gets the full team.

How to plan your wedding film in 2026

  1. Lock dates early. Good crews get booked first in peak season.
  2. Map every function — what time, where, and what matters most in each.
  3. Decide your deliverables: teaser, reels, highlight film, full-length video, album.
  4. Ask about delivery timelines in writing.
  5. Watch complete films from your team, not just highlights.
