Why your business needs a Google Business Profile (and how to set it up right)

When someone types “best dentist near me” or “cake shop in Prayagraj”, Google shows a map with three businesses at the top. Those three get most of the calls, the direction requests and the walk-ins. The listing behind each of them is a Google Business Profile (earlier called Google My Business). It is free, and for most local businesses it is the single most valuable online asset they own.

What a Google Business Profile does for you

  • Shows up on Search and Maps exactly when people are ready to buy.
  • One-tap actions: call, directions, website — without the customer needing your number.
  • Reviews build trust before anyone meets you.
  • Photos and posts show that you are open, active and real.
  • Free insights: how many people searched, called and asked for directions.

Many businesses in smaller cities still don’t have a verified profile, or have one that a customer created years ago with the wrong timings. That is an opportunity: a well-kept profile can stand out quickly.

Step-by-step set-up checklist

1. Claim or create the profile

Search your business name on Google Maps. If a listing exists, choose “Claim this business”. If not, add it from Google Business Profile with your Google account. Use the account you will keep long-term — the profile should always stay in the owner’s name.

2. Verify it

Google asks for verification (often a video showing your shop, signboard and location, or another method it offers). Until it’s verified, many edits won’t show publicly. Do this first.

3. Get the basics exactly right

  • Business name: your real name, as on your signboard. Don’t stuff keywords or city names — it can get the profile suspended.
  • Primary category: the most specific one (“Dental clinic”, not just “Clinic”). Add a few secondary categories.
  • Address and pin on the map: check the pin is on your exact building.
  • Phone, WhatsApp-friendly number, website and correct hours, including holiday hours during festivals.

4. Add services and a real description

List your services with short descriptions in plain language — the way customers search. Write a description that says what you do, for whom, and where: “Family dental clinic in Civil Lines, Mirzapur — root canal, braces and kids’ dentistry.”

5. Upload good photos (and keep adding)

Add your logo, a cover photo, the outside of your shop (so people can find it), the inside, your team and your products or work. Real, bright phone photos are better than stock images. Add a few new ones every month.

Reviews: the part most businesses ignore

  • Ask every happy customer. Share your review link on WhatsApp right after a good experience.
  • Reply to every review — thank the good ones, and answer complaints calmly with a solution. Future customers read your replies.
  • Never buy or fake reviews. It breaks Google’s rules and can get reviews removed or the profile restricted. We never do this for clients.

Keep it alive

Post updates — offers, new arrivals, events — a few times a month. Update hours before festivals. Answer messages and calls quickly. An active profile tells both customers and Google that you are open for business.

Quick test: search your category + your area on Google Maps from your phone. If you are not in the top results, start with categories, photos and reviews — they are the levers you control.

Profile plus ads

A strong profile brings free visibility. If you want to appear at the very top for high-intent searches like “PG near BHU” or “wedding photographer Varanasi”, Google Search ads can add calls on top of that — with tracking so you know which rupee brought which enquiry.
